In my latest video, I talked about how Bitwig Studio's sampler lacks a slicing mode—a feature I believe is essential for such a dynamic instrument. Here are the key moments from the video:
I mentioned my disappointment that the revamped sampler in Bitwig Studio doesn't include a slicing feature to easily map drum loops and such onto a MIDI keyboard.
To address this, I created a slicing tool inside Bitwig's grid, which I demonstrated but could not show how to build from scratch due to the complexity and time it would take to explain.
I explained my transient detector module, which scans a drum loop and stores slice positions into an array for keyboard mapping.
I walked through the process of how the sample is loaded, scanned, and how each detected transient is mapped to a key, allowing for keyboard playback of slices.
I discussed the technical aspects, like using an envelope follower for transient detection and converting pitch to integers for accurate key mapping.
I shared my solution for handling the start and end points of slices, converting the position to loop length in percentage for the sampler.
I touched upon the scanning process, which uses an envelope for a ramp signal, and how different settings can affect the transient detection.
I emphasized that the patch I created is fast and responsive, but requires a slight delay in triggering to ensure the correct slice is played.
Finally, I invited viewers to download the patch from my Patreon page and encouraged Bitwig Studio to incorporate a native slicing feature in the future.
