Question 1

What is the difference between VST2 and VST3?

Accepted Answer

VST3 is the current standard developed by Steinberg — it supports side-chain inputs, dynamic I/O, better CPU efficiency, and per-note expression (MPE). VST2 is the older format still supported by most DAWs including FL Studio and Ableton Live. If your DAW supports both, prefer VST3 for new installs; only use VST2 when a VST3 version is unavailable.

Question 2

How do I install a VST plugin?

Accepted Answer

On Windows: run the installer or copy the .dll (VST2) or .vst3 bundle to C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3, then rescan plugins in your DAW. On macOS: run the .pkg installer or copy the .vst3 bundle to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST3; for AU format copy .component to /Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components. Restart your DAW and trigger a plugin rescan to make them appear.

Question 3

Which DAWs support VST, VST3, and AU plugins?

Accepted Answer

FL Studio, Ableton Live, Reaper, Cubase, Studio One, and Bitwig support VST2 and VST3 on Windows and macOS. Logic Pro X and GarageBand use AU (Audio Units) on macOS exclusively. Pro Tools uses AAX format. Most plugins ship with multiple formats in a single installer so you get the right version for your DAW automatically.

Question 4

Are free VST plugins safe to install?

Accepted Answer

Plugins hosted on Plugg Supply are sourced from verified developer releases and established music production communities. Always download installers from the original developer page linked in each post. Run downloads through Windows Defender or macOS Gatekeeper before installing, and avoid cracked or patched versions which can contain malware.
