Serum presets store a complete synth patch: oscillator choices, filters, envelopes, LFO routing, macros, and effects. A preset may also depend on custom wavetables, noise files, samples, or Serum 2 features, so the pack's version and included assets matter as much as the .fxp files.

This guide is based on Xfer Records' import instructions and its Serum 1-to-2 compatibility notes. We reviewed documentation and source pages; we did not audition every preset pack in a DAW.

How to install third-party Serum presets

  1. Read the pack page first. Confirm whether it targets Serum 1, Serum 2, or both, and whether it includes custom wavetables, noises, or samples.
  2. Extract the archive. Keep its original folders until you understand which files belong under Presets, Tables or Wavetables, Noises, and Samples.
  3. Open Serum's own content folder. In Serum choose Menu → Show Serum Presets Folder; this is safer than assuming a fixed path that may have been moved or redirected to OneDrive.
  4. Copy the pack into the matching subfolders. Put preset folders inside Presets and copy any supplied assets into the corresponding content folders without flattening their structure.
  5. Rescan from Serum. Choose Menu → Rescan folders on disk, then open the preset browser and confirm that the pack appears.
  6. Troubleshoot missing content before deleting anything. Reopen the pack instructions, confirm its required Serum version, and verify that custom assets kept the folder layout expected by the preset creator.

How to evaluate and use a free preset pack

  • Start with the official source — Prefer the creator's product page or a catalog record that links back to it. Avoid repacks that remove the readme, license, or version notes.
  • Separate Serum 1 and Serum 2 requirements — Xfer documents that Serum 1 presets load in Serum 2, while presets created with Serum 2 cannot be loaded in Serum 1.
  • Check bundled assets — A .fxp can open but sound wrong when a custom wavetable, noise, sample, or multisample is missing. Keep the archive's asset folders together.
  • Use macros before deep editing — Macro labels reveal what the designer intended to vary. Automate one or two meaningful controls before changing the full modulation matrix.
  • Save edits as a new preset — Preserve the original patch and save your variation with a clear name so project recall and future pack updates remain predictable.

Are Serum 1 presets compatible with Serum 2?
Yes. Xfer Records states that Serum 1 presets are compatible with Serum 2. The reverse is not true: presets saved with Serum 2 features cannot be loaded in Serum 1.
Where should I put third-party Serum presets?
Use Serum's Menu → Show Serum Presets Folder command, then copy the pack into the Presets subfolder. This avoids relying on a path that may differ because of OneDrive, a relocated content folder, or a custom setup.
Why does a Serum preset load with missing or different sounds?
The patch may reference a custom wavetable, noise, sample, or multisample that was not copied into the expected folder. Re-extract the original archive and preserve its folder structure.
Can Serum 2 preview third-party presets?
