What an Envelope Follower Does

An envelope follower measures the amplitude contour of a source and outputs a control signal—often used to duck synths, open filters, or pump distortion based on bass guitar or 808 envelopes.

On bass, followers can sidechain pads to the 808 without traditional compressor sidechain routing, or modulate wobble depth to track note length.

Attack and release on the follower shape how tightly the effect tracks: fast attack catches transients; slower release avoids chatter on busy 808 patterns.

Place the follower after the bass tone you want analyzed but before effects that should not skew the detection (sometimes pre-EQ with high-pass on detector only).
