Quick Answer

Scintillate is the free Sweet Audio + Signalsmith spectral “sparkle engine” reverb that won KVR Developer Challenge 2026—not the 56-plugin contest roundup, and not a Blackhole or Valhalla Shimmer clone. KVR announced 1st place on 11 August 2026 (multi-format, multi-OS: 60% of the prize fund). Formats: VST3, AU, and CLAP on Windows and macOS. Copy protection: none. Product listing we cite: version 1.0.1.[1][2] Sparkles spawn inside a conventional reverb spectrum; density can act as a spectral gate. Prefer native CLAP when the host supports it.

Stay here for Scintillate: who shipped it, the 11 August 2026 KVRDC win, the sparkle-engine job, formats, and the 1.0.1 install notes on KVR’s product page. Do not use this file as a tour of all 56 contest entries, a voting recap, or a freeware tier list.

The related KVR Developer Challenge 2026 article is the field shortlist. This page is the dedicated product file for the winner. KVR’s contest hub still lists the 56-entry field; winners were announced 11 August 2026, not on the earlier “August 4” placeholder some roundup copy used while voting was open.[1][3]

If you need gravity-well FX versus octave-up shimmer, use the related Blackhole versus Shimmer page. If you want ambient arrangement rather than one free send, use the related ambient-music page. If you need free EQ moves around a sparkly tail, use the related FabFilter-style EQ page. This file does not teach those tools.

11 August 2026: KVRDC First Place. Still Free.

KVR’s winners post (Ben [KVR], 11 August 2026): Scintillate by Sweet Audio and Signalsmith Audio takes 1st. DSP is Signalsmith; everything else is Sweet Audio. Windows and macOS; VST3, AU, and CLAP. As a multi-format, multi-OS entry it receives 60% of the prize fund. The hub lists that fund at $1,913.70 (donations closed). Do not invent a dollar split beyond “60%.”[1][3]

Contest dates on the official hub: submission 6 July, download and voting 7 July, winners 11 August 2026. The per-entry news post went up 8 July 2026 while voting was live. This page cites both: the July product announcement and the August win.[3][4]

KVR’s product page: Free, copy protection none, version 1.0.1 on the listing we cite. Sweet Audio’s own site points downloads at that KVR product page. First Sweet Audio release; they call it a technical test of an in-house framework before larger plugins later in 2026. Founder named on the product page: Marius Metzger (CrispyTuner, later Plugin Alliance bx_crispytuner).[2][5]

Sweet Audio’s 11 August comment on the winners thread planned a 1.1.0 build “around the end of August.” The KVR product listing this September 2026 file cites is still 1.0.1. Do not assume 1.1.0 shipped; check the live product page.

Sparkle Engine: Spectral Hits Inside a Reverb

KVR’s product and winners copy use the same definition: Scintillate is a spectral reverb Sparkle Engine. Sparkles are generated within the spectrum of a conventional reverb. Spawn and decay rates move those sparkles from “fairy dust” through a fluttering wall of sound into reverse-style effects. Lower density lets only the loudest sparkles through—KVR’s phrase is colour-ful spectral gate effects.[2][1]

That is not a room algorithm with a shimmer slider glued on, and it is not Eventide’s chromatic-scale modal engine. Databroth’s July 2026 contest listen (third-party, not a spec sheet) describes reverb-side length/tone/shimmer plus sparkle processing, and notes that really short decays exaggerate a watery quality.[8] Use Databroth as a listen-through, not as Sweet Audio’s manual.

Beatmaker job: a send on hats, vocal chops, bells, or a thin lead when you want the tail to glitter instead of wash. It will not replace a verse plate, and it will not give you Blackhole freeze. If the sparkles eat the 808, you set density too high or you skipped the high-pass on the return.

  • Spawn / decay Official copy: different spawn and decay rates from dust to wall-of-sound to reverse-style tails.[2]
  • Density Official copy: reducing density keeps only the loudest sparkles—spectral-gate territory.[2]
  • Wet Gain (1.0.1) Changelog: Wet Gain exists as a DAW-only parameter, not on the GUI.[2]
  • Prefer CLAP Native CLAP; VST3 and AU via clap-wrapper. Sweet Audio: prefer CLAP for native parameter modulation and host undo/redo.[2][6]

VST3 / AU / CLAP. Download 1.0.1 from KVR.

Install from KVR’s Scintillate product/downloads page (Windows x64 zip; macOS universal dmg on the listing). Sweet Audio’s site is a pointer, not a second store.[2][5] There is no AAX row on that page. There is no Linux row. Pro Tools users do not get a native Eventide-style AAX door here.

macOS important note on the product page: installation fails if ~/Library/Audio/Presets is not owned by your user. Sweet Audio documents that another installer may have left the folder owned by root; they say they are working on a fix. Do not treat a failed install as “the plugin is Intel-only”—1.0.1’s changelog adds Intel support and moves presets into the user Library for Logic’s sandbox.[2]

Windows 1.0.1 changelog: scaling fixes when Display Scale is not 100%; Bitwig duplicate-instance white-screen fix; Ableton Live state-load fix; knobs scrollable and less sensitive. If you still run 1.0.0, you are on the build those notes replaced.[2]

Not Shimmer, Not Blackhole, Not Your Only Room

Keep the jobs apart. Scintillate is free spectral sparkle inside a reverb. Eventide Blackhole is a dramatic gravity-well space. Valhalla Shimmer is a pitch-shifted cloud. A stock room/plate is the everyday snare box. Winning KVRDC does not make Scintillate a replacement for those paid specialty verbs—or for a workhorse hall.

  1. Download 1.0.1 from KVR, not a random mirror
Product page: free Windows and macOS builds, version 1.0.1. Sweet Audio’s site links that page.[2][5]
  2. Prefer CLAP; fall back to VST3 or AU
Native CLAP, clap-wrapper for VST3/AU. No AAX, no Linux on the cited page.[2][6]
  3. Fix macOS Presets ownership if the installer dies
Product note: fails if ~/Library/Audio/Presets is not owned by your user. That is a folder-permissions issue Sweet Audio documents, not a cracked build.[2]
  4. Put it on a high-passed send; start with lower density
Sparkles live inside a reverb spectrum. Density down = fewer, louder sparkles. Wet Gain, if you need it, is a DAW parameter in 1.0.1.[2]
  5. Do not treat this page as the contest field
Once the send is up, the other 55 entries live on the related KVRDC 2026 roundup. This file stops at Scintillate.
