"1" is direct center of the cap, on axis, against the grill. Every following number is in reference to the center of cap, "2" being to the right 1/2 inch (1.27 cm), "3" is another 1/2 inch to the right of the previous position, moving towards the edge of the speaker, and so on. These small adjustments give a ultra precise capture of the cab. The higher the number, the farther out from the cap and the darker the tone will be. Lower number = brighter.
