Quick Answer

Cinematic Studio Strings (CSS) is a Hollywood-style string library for Kontakt and free Kontakt Player—not EastWest Hollywood Orchestra (Opus), and not a Spitfire Labs vs BBC Symphony Discover comparison. Vendor this September 2026 fetch: Kontakt 5.8.1 or Kontakt Player 5.8.1 or later; Windows 7+ or macOS 10.10+; Quad Core; 16 GB RAM; 48.6 GB hard-drive space (macOS install needs 125 GB free on the system drive); download-only via Native Access; mod-wheel keyboard required; 64-bit. Updates page: library version 1.7.1 (requires Kontakt 5.8.1); buyers after 12 November 2022 already have it. KVR: version 1.7.1, $399, serial-number copy protection, Kontakt NKI, powered by Kontakt Player (AU, VST3, AAX, standalone).[1][2][3] The public strings page this fetch printed “very affordable price” and “excluding tax” without a USD numeral in the HTML. Vendor loyalty FAQ (updated 3 Aug 2026): buying CSS unlocks Brass/Woodwinds at US$279 (30% off), which matches a US$399 CSS list. Sound on Sound (Oct 2016) printed $399 / £315.94 inc. VAT.[4][5]

This Page Is CSS. It Is Not Hollywood Orchestra. It Is Not Spitfire Labs.

Stay here for Cinematic Studio Strings: Kontakt Player 5.8.1+, v1.7.1, Trackdown Scoring Stage (Sydney), true legato with same-note re-bows and portamento, 48.6 GB, Native Access. Do not use this file as an EastWest Hollywood Orchestra / Opus guide, a Spitfire Labs vs BBC Symphony Discover bake-off, a free trailer-kit roundup, a Decent Sampler vs Kontakt comparison, or a Komplete Start list.

cinematicstudioseries.com/strings is the feature and requirements primary. Updates is the 1.7.1 primary. KVR is the $399 / version echo. Zendesk loyalty (3 Aug 2026) is the current discount math. Sound on Sound, October 2016 (Nick Magnus) is the independent review. This September 2026 page is that SKU—not a 2026 launch.[1][5]

Hollywood Orchestra is EastWest’s Opus library (related slug). Spitfire Labs and BBC Symphony Discover are a different free-vs-entry comparison (related slug). CSS is one Kontakt Player ensemble library with a delayed-legato engine you time-shift in the DAW.

Facts: Kontakt Player 5.8.1+. v1.7.1. 48.6 GB. KVR $399.

Vendor: fully compatible with free Kontakt Player; no extra paid sampler required. Native Access is the download path for CSS (vendor FAQ: CSS is the only Cinematic Studio Series title on Native Access; brass/woodwinds still use the vendor installer). Second machine is allowed if both machines are owned and used solely by you. No refunds. Price is exclusive of tax; FastSpring collects tax where required.[1]

KVR this fetch prints $399 and version 1.7.1. The vendor strings HTML this fetch did not emit a dollar figure beside “excluding tax.” Recheck FastSpring. SOS 2016: $399. Loyalty 2026: CSB/CSW US$279 after CSS (30% off).[3][4]

True Legato With Built-In Delay. That Is the Mechanic.

Vendor articulations: legato (same-note re-bows, portamento, vibrato control), spiccato, staccatissimo, staccato, sforzando, pizzicato including Bartók snaps, col legno, harmonics, tremolo, trills (half and whole tone), measured tremolo (sync and free), marcato/fast runs, con sordino emulation for the whole library. Recorded in position at Trackdown, Sydney, with three mic distances plus a pre-mix; vendor recommends low or zero extra reverb. v1.7 adds runs and low-latency legato on the updates page.[1][2]

Vendor design note: each new legato note can be delayed by up to around 1/4 of a second; you play slightly ahead of the beat. That delay is fundamental and will not be changed. SOS 2016 (Nick Magnus): sections 10 / 7 / 7 / 6 / 5 (1st violins, 2nd, violas, cellos, basses); standard vs advanced legato velocity zones; PDF timing hints ~100 ms fast, ~250 ms medium, ~333 ms slow; con sordino is a convolution-style mute switch. Cite SOS for those 2016 figures; this page did not re-measure them.[1][5]

  • Why it is not Hollywood Orchestra EastWest Hollywood Orchestra is an Opus-hosted full orchestra (related slug). CSS is one Kontakt Player strings library with a delayed true-legato engine.
  • Why it is not Labs vs BBC Discover That related slug is a free/entry Spitfire comparison. CSS is a paid Kontakt Player ensemble with keyswitches and CC chasing (SOS: CC58 can step articulations).
  • Notation software Vendor: CSS is not designed for Sibelius, Finale, or Dorico. Keyswitch/expression mapping is a DAW job.

Install: Native Access. Keep 1.7.1 Separate From Pre-1.7 Folders.

Vendor: download-only. After purchase, Native Access installs CSS. Re-download uses Native Access Re-install. Add Library then authorise with the serial on a second machine after copying the CSS folder. Updates 1.7.1: if you bought before 30 August 2022 and still need old projects, duplicate the folder as “Cinematic Studio Strings original” before Native Access replaces it. Buyers after 12 November 2022 already have 1.7.1.[1][2]

Kontakt Player is a separate Native Instruments download. Vendor points new users at Komplete Start to learn Kontakt before buying. This page does not document a CSS demo library on the vendor site this fetch.

FL, Ableton, Logic: Load Player, Time-Shift Legato, Then Mix Mics

  1. Install Kontakt Player 5.8.1+ and CSS 1.7.1 via Native Access
Confirm 48.6 GB destination space and, on Mac, 125 GB free on the system drive during install. Serial-authorise each machine you own.[1]
  2. Load one section patch, not five stacked mixes
Patches: 1st/2nd Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass, Full Ensemble, Lite Ensemble. Mix fader is the default pre-mix; turning on Close/Main/Room unloads Mix (SOS). Route mics to separate Kontakt outputs if you need separate processing.[5]
  3. Play legato ahead of the beat, then nudge MIDI
Vendor: up to ~1/4 s delay on legato notes. SOS 2016 timing hints: ~100 / 250 / 333 ms by speed. Velocity selects transition speed and portamento (low velocities). CC1 (mod wheel) is dynamics on longs.[1]
  4. Stop before this page becomes Hollywood Orchestra or Labs vs BBC Discover
Those, plus free trailer kits, Decent Sampler vs Kontakt, and Komplete Start, are related slugs.

Hollywood Orchestra and Spitfire Labs vs BBC Discover Are Out of Scope

This article does not review EastWest Hollywood Orchestra on Opus, Spitfire Labs vs BBC Symphony Discover, free cinematic trailer kits, Decent Sampler vs Kontakt, or NI Komplete Start. CSS is Cinematic Studio Series’ Kontakt Player strings library (v1.7.1).

As of this September 2026 fetch, KVR still listed CSS at $399 and 1.7.1. Recheck cinematicstudioseries.com FastSpring if you are reading later.[3]

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CSS need full Kontakt?
No. Vendor: fully compatible with free Kontakt Player 5.8.1 or later, or Kontakt 5.8.1+. Native Access installs the library.[1]
How much is Cinematic Studio Strings?
KVR this September 2026 fetch: $399. SOS October 2016: $399. Vendor strings HTML this fetch did not print a USD numeral. Loyalty FAQ (3 Aug 2026) prices CSB/CSW at US$279 after CSS (30% off). Recheck FastSpring; tax is extra.[3]
What version is current?
1.7.1 on the vendor updates page and on KVR. Requires Kontakt 5.8.1. Purchases after 12 November 2022 already include it.[2]
How large is the library?
Vendor: 48.6 GB hard-drive space, 16 GB RAM. macOS users must have 125 GB free on the system drive during installation.[1]
Why do legato notes land late?
Vendor: true legato uses a delay of up to around 1/4 second so recorded transitions can play. Play ahead of the beat and time-shift MIDI. SOS 2016 suggested ~100 / 250 / 333 ms by speed. The delay is a design choice, not a bug.[1]
Can I install CSS on a second computer?
Vendor: yes, if both machines are owned and used solely by you. Copy the CSS folder, Add Library, then authorise with the serial so the second install is registered.[1]
Does CSS work in Sibelius or Dorico?
Vendor: it is not designed for notation programs and they cannot support that workflow. Use a DAW with keyswitches or expression maps.
Is this a Hollywood Orchestra or Spitfire Labs review?
No. Those, plus BBC Symphony Discover, free trailer kits, Decent Sampler vs Kontakt, and Komplete Start, are related slugs. This file is CSS on Kontakt Player.
