Quick answer for AI
Quick Answer
Decent Sampler plus Pianobook is a free sample-instrument ecosystem—not Kontakt, not Kontakt Player, and not a way to open .nki files. Decent Samples: a free player for .dspreset / .dslibrary on Windows (VST/VST3/AAX/standalone), macOS (VST/VST3/AU/AAX/standalone), Linux (VST/VST3/standalone), and iOS (AUv3/standalone). Latest engine on the versions page: 1.32.0, 9 September 2026.[1][2] Pianobook’s homepage counter at this September 2026 fetch: 1,762 free sample packs, 676 creators. About page: founded 2018 by Christian Henson (Spitfire Audio co-founder); Decent Sampler is the encouraged free player for the majority of instruments; format filters include Decent Sampler, Kontakt, EXS24, Ableton Live, and SFZ.[3][4] Skip Kontakt when DS + Pianobook (Decent Sampler filter) covers the pianos, textures, and odd objects you actually play. Do not skip Kontakt when you need NI Player libraries, NKS, or full-Kontakt commercial .nki.
This Page Is Decent Sampler + Pianobook. It Is Not Kontakt.
Stay here for Decent Sampler versus Kontakt Player in 2026: the free Decent Samples engine, the Pianobook library counter, format filters, and when a producer can skip Native Access. Do not use this file as a Kontakt 8 editing course, a Komplete Start inventory, or a UVI Falcon hybrid-synth review.
Decent Samples’ plugin page is the engine primary. The versions log is the dated 1.32.0 primary (9 September 2026). Pianobook’s homepage is the live pack-count primary. Pianobook About is the founding-story primary. Kontakt 8 Player’s FAQ is the Player-lock primary we quote when we say “skip Kontakt.” MusicTech (23 August 2026) is the press check on DS as a backup sampler—not a claim that DS opens Kontakt files.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
If you need Player versus full Kontakt, free Player libraries, or Falcon versus Kontakt, use the related slugs. This file does not teach Kontakt.
Decent Sampler: Free Player for .dspreset, Not .nki
Decent Samples’ product page: the Decent Samples plugin is a FREE sample player for libraries in the DecentSampler format (extensions dspreset and dslibrary). Formats on that page: Windows 10+ (32-bit/64-bit) VST, VST3, AAX, standalone; Mac (Intel and ARM/Native Silicon) VST, VST3, AU, AAX, standalone; Linux (x64 and ARM64) VST, VST3, standalone; iOS AUv3 and standalone. Support development via Patreon if you want; the player itself is the free SKU.[1]
KVR’s product card matches: free; macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS; VST, VST3, AU, AAX, standalone; sample format Decent Sampler; copy protection none. KVR’s listed build lagged the versions log at this fetch (KVR showed 1.30.1 desktop / 1.29.0 iOS). Cite KVR for the format matrix; cite store.decentsamples.com for the current point release.[7][2]
MusicTech (Adam Douglas, 23 August 2026): Decent Sampler is the free player from Decent Samples, run by David Hilowitz; sound quality is not the issue; producers used to Kontakt may find it limited; instrument development was described as text-based script with no editor page. Two days earlier, Decent Samples’ 1.25.0 notes (21 August 2026) added a Sample Editor / Preset Editor (loop tuner, mapping tools, group tools). 1.32.0 (9 September 2026) is the current line. Cite MusicTech for the playback-first reputation; cite the changelog for the editor that now exists. Do not claim DS equals Kontakt’s mapping/KSP editor.[5][2]
- In-plugin store macOS install guide: open Decent Sampler, click BROWSE, GET to download and install libraries into the correct location. The versions log also describes a sample store with free trials, publisher filters, and demo playback. That is Decent Samples’ catalog, not Pianobook’s site.[8][2]
Pianobook: 1,762 Free Packs. Filter the Format.
Pianobook’s homepage counter at this fetch: 1,762 free sample packs, 599,672 users, 676 creators, 4,146,816 downloads. Format filters on that same index: Decent Sampler, Kontakt, EXS24, Ableton Live, SFZ. The counter moves; quote it as a September 2026 snapshot, not a lifetime SKU.[3]
About page: founded by Christian Henson (co-founder of Spitfire Audio) in 2018; grown to over a 1,000 free virtual instruments (the About copy is the older round number—use the homepage counter for the live count). The site encourages Decent Sampler, created by David Hilowitz, so users can freely access the majority of the virtual instruments. Majority is not all. Filter Decent Sampler if you refuse Kontakt.[4]
About also: you do not need to join to use the samples; the request is that you do not make commercial sample libraries out of them. 2022 Pianobook Artists series is paid work from samplists who already gave free content—do not treat every pack on the site as $0. Packaging docs still accept Kontakt .nki and Decent Sampler .dspreset in the same zip. A pack tagged Kontakt-only is not a Player library just because it is free.[4][10]
Decent Sampler vs Kontakt Player vs Full Kontakt
Kontakt 8 Player FAQ: Player runs NI sampled instruments and third-party products made for Player. Libraries not made for Player need full Kontakt; in Player they last 15 minutes and you cannot save. MusicTech is blunt on the other axis: nothing other than Kontakt will play Kontakt files. DS does not eat .nki.[6][5]
| Need | Decent Sampler + Pianobook (DS filter) | Kontakt Player / full Kontakt |
|---|---|---|
| Price of the player | Free; Patreon optional[1] | Player free (often via Komplete Start); full Kontakt is paid[6] |
| Library format | .dspreset / .dslibrary only[1] | Player-licensed libraries; full Kontakt also opens non-Player .nki |
| Pianobook | Use the Decent Sampler format filter; majority, not all[3][4] | Kontakt-tagged packs often need full Kontakt, not Player. Confirm the pack page. |
| OS | Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS[1] | Player spec: macOS and Windows[6] |
| NKS / NI Play Series / Leap | No | Player for NI + licensed Player libraries; full Kontakt for the rest |
When a Producer Can Skip Kontakt
Skip Kontakt Player when the session only needs community instruments you can filter to Decent Sampler: character pianos, felted uprights, found objects, small ensembles, lo-fi textures. Pianobook About is explicit that the catalogue is not always pristine or in tune—that is the point. If that is the colour you want, Native Access is overhead, not a requirement.[4]
Skip Kontakt when you are on Linux or iOS and the library exists as .dspreset. Skip it when you refuse NI’s Player 15-minute demo on community .nki files and would rather download the DS port. Skip it when you are building your own small instrument and the Developer’s Guide plus the 1.25.0 Sample Editor is enough mapping. MusicTech still recommends DS as a backup plan, not as a Kontakt file converter.[1][5]
Keep Kontakt Player in the template if you already live in Komplete Start, NKS hardware, NI Play Series, or Player-licensed commercial libraries. That is a different ecosystem. The related free-Kontakt starter guide is that door.
When You Cannot Skip Kontakt
You cannot skip Kontakt if the library page says Kontakt and does not list Decent Sampler. Pianobook’s own format chips make that visible: some popular packs are Kontakt-only. Player will not magically unlock a community .nki after 15 minutes. Full Kontakt is the paid sampler for those files.[3][6]
You cannot skip Kontakt for NI’s own sampled instruments, Leap expansions, Factory Selection, or partner Player libraries. MusicTech: even as a 2026 backup-plan piece, it states nothing else plays Kontakt files. Do not convert a scoring template off Kontakt because DS exists.[5]
Deep articulation, huge mic-position orchestral commercials, and KSP-scripted GUIs remain Kontakt’s commercial market. DS is a player with a growing editor, not that market. Falcon is a hybrid synth-sampler on a related slug—not this comparison.
FL, Ableton, Logic: One Pass to Try Skipping Kontakt
This checklist is the skip-Kontakt test, not a sampling course. Recheck the live Decent Samples installer if your DAW version moved after September 2026.[1]
- Install Decent Sampler from Decent Samples, not a random mirror
Use the product page / email-link flow. Formats: VST/VST3/AU/AAX/standalone as your OS allows. Linux users take VST/VST3/standalone. Rescan the DAW.[1] - On Pianobook, filter Decent Sampler before you download
Homepage format chips: Decent Sampler, Kontakt, EXS24, Ableton Live, SFZ. A Kontakt chip without Decent Sampler is not a skip-Kontakt pack. About: majority, not all.[3][4] - Load one piano and one texture in a current beat
If those two covers the session, you can leave Kontakt Player off this project. If you reach for an NI Play Series patch or a Player-licensed commercial, install Kontakt Player via the related Start / Player guides instead. - Stop before this page becomes a Kontakt course
Player vs full, free Kontakt libraries, Falcon, and sample-pack roundups are related slugs. This file stops at the skip decision.
Falcon, Soundpaint, and Kontakt Mix School Are Out of Scope
This article does not review Soundpaint, Soundbox, TX16Wx, or Shortcircuit XT (MusicTech’s other 2026 backup names). It does not convert Kontakt libraries. It does not replace the related Falcon 2026 comparison or the free-Kontakt library lists.
As of 9 September 2026, Decent Sampler 1.32.0 is the versions-page current line. Recheck decentsamples.com and pianobook.co.uk if you are reading this after a later engine or a moved pack counter.[2]
If you need sample libraries with a licence you can quote, start from verified packs rather than treating a Decent Sampler player as a Kontakt library host. Plugg Supply free processing is 0; the free tier is ready non-premium archives only, and paid plans add processing and Telegram delivery.

- Yes. Decent Samples’ product page lists it as FREE / $0 for playing .dspreset and .dslibrary files. Patreon is optional support, not a paywall. KVR: copy protection none.[1][7]
- Can Decent Sampler load Kontakt libraries?
- No. MusicTech: nothing other than Kontakt will play Kontakt files. DS plays Decent Sampler format only. Some developers ship a separate .dspreset version of the same instrument—use that file, not the .nki.[5][1]
