Rack Extensions Basics

Hide cables for performers; keep a “service” Combinator variant with cables visible for yourself. Document CV tricks in the patch description field so future you remembers why an LFO is inverted.

When an RE is discontinued or replaced, your Combinator notes will tell you what to rebuild. Without notes, you only have a mysterious sound and tears.

Budget monthly for sound design tools the way you budget sample packs — deliberately. One RE you master beats five you open once.

Color devices by role. Use containers/folders habits consistent with your other DAW so your brain transfers. When inspiration hits, the template should be invisible.

At project end, freeze/bounce heavy RE instruments and save a lightweight “mix” copy of the song for revisions without full DSP load.

Learning New REs Without Derailing Songs

Schedule dedicated RE study sessions on separate calendar blocks from client writing days. Curiosity is healthy; hijacking a deadline song to learn a new granular RE is how calendars explode.

Take notes in a running document: what the RE does better than stock, CPU cost, and one patch idea. If you cannot fill those three lines after a trial, do not buy it.
