What Serum Presets Actually Are

A Serum preset is a single .fxp file that captures oscillator wavetables, filter routing, envelope shapes, LFO assignments, effects chain settings, and macro knob mappings. On macOS, the equivalent is often ~/Documents/Xfer/Serum Presets/ or under ~/Music/ depending on version and installer era. Apple Silicon and Intel builds share the same user folders as long as you did not run separate OS user accounts.

To install a purchased or free pack: quit Serum instances in the DAW, copy .fxp files into the appropriate User subfolder, optionally copy Tables, relaunch Serum, and hit refresh if the browser cache is stale. Do not place third-party .fxp inside Factory — updates may wipe unrecognized files.

Genre Use: Which Presets Matter

Trap and hip-hop producers spend most preset browsing time on short-decay plucks, bell-like digital leads, distorted 808 bass layers, and noise-heavy FX for transitions. Presets with macro knobs mapped to filter cutoff and reverb mix speed up beat-making more than static one-shot samples because you can ride automation during arrangement.

Drill and UK bass lean on dark reese bass presets (multiple detuned saws with band-pass motion) and metallic percussion-ish FM clicks. Look for banks tagged reese, 140, or slide bass — then tune oscillators to your track key.

When collaborating, export a small note listing preset name, pack author, and macro positions — partners without the same pack cannot open your session faithfully.
