Quick Answer

Zebra 3 is u-he’s 20 April 2026 rebuild—virtual analogue, physical modelling, and digital synthesis in one adaptive rack—not a Serum preset flipper and not a free-synth substitute. The product page lists 249 € as of this September 2026 writing, with 1,200+ factory presets, spline oscillators (wavetable up to 16× unison or additive up to 1024 partials), analogue-modelled filters, modal resonators/combs, and through-zero FM. Version 3.0.0 shipped 20 April 2026; 3.0.2 is dated 15 July 2026 on the same page.[1][2] Pre-1 November 2022 Zebra 2 owners should check My Licenses for an upgrade; u-he still prints no crossgrade from Zebra Legacy. The 2022 Legacy note promised $30 USD from Zebra 2 (pricing later moved to Euro) and a free path if you also held The Dark Zebra—confirm the live quote in your account, do not treat a forum screenshot as the cart.[2][3]

This Is a Sound-Design Synth for Ableton and FL. Not a Preset Browser.

Stay here for u-he Zebra 3 as a deep instrument you open in Ableton Live or FL Studio when a wavetable lead is not enough: spline oscillators, analogue-modelled filters, and physical-modelling resonators. Do not use this page as a Serum 2 vs Vital shootout, a Pigments engine tour, or a free-synth list.

Those comparisons live on the related Serum / Vital / Phase Plant, Pigments, Kilohearts, and free-synth articles. This file is the Zebra 3 product review: what shipped 20 April 2026, what 249 € buys on u-he.com, and how a beatmaker should start a patch without living in the 200-page manual.

u-he: Zebra 3 “builds on decades of experience gained through several generations of Zebra2” but is “an entirely new development.” Do not expect Zebra 2 / Zebra Legacy banks to drop in as .h2p and sound identical.[1]

20 April 2026, After a Decade of Zebra 3 Talk

u-he’s news post is dated Monday, 20 April 2026: Zebra 3.0.0 is out. The 2022 Legacy announcement already counted “10 years of speculation about an imminent Zebra3 release” (the upgrade promise itself goes back to 2012). This page does not invent a single “ten-year development clock”; it cites those two u-he dates.[1][3]

Release notes: 3.0.0 revision 21799 on 20 April 2026. The product page, as of this writing, shows 3.0.2 (rev. 22175) — 15 July 2026. Public beta ran from December 2025; that licence is not the paid 3.0.x licence.[4][2]

Formats on reseller/spec roundups that match u-he’s usual stack: CLAP, VST3, AU, AAX; macOS, Windows, Linux. MusicTech and CDM both describe an adaptive UI—modules appear when you add them, drag-and-drop, no patch cables.[5][6]

Spline Oscillators: Draw the Wave, Do Not Only Scan a Table

u-he’s launch note leads with spline-based morphing oscillators and through-zero FMOs. The product page: four main oscillators morph between hand-drawn spline waveforms and can render as wavetables (up to 16-voice unison) or additive engines (up to 1024 sine partials, inharmonic allowed). A unified spline editor also covers MSEG curves, with geometric morphing.[1][2]

If you came from Serum, the habit is: pick a table, warp it, LFO the WT pos. In Zebra 3 you can still scan, but the interesting move is drawing Bézier geometry (or the spectral curve view) and morphing between those drawings. MusicTech: waveforms from Bézier curves in classic wavetable or the additive engine; two oscillator-effect slots with 20 options including spectral decay, sync, and phase remapping.[5]

For a trap lead: one oscillator, a short table of two or three drawn shapes, an MSEG on morph, analogue-style lowpass after. Do not enable 16× unison and 1024 partials on the first patch in a 40-track session.

Analogue Filters Plus Physical Modelling, in One Rack

u-he’s product copy: rebuilt with virtual analogue, physical modelling, and purely digital synthesis. Filters: 13 models (Ladder, Cascade, SVF and others), each with up to 12 responses—CDM counts “over 105 filter responses.” That is the Diva-adjacent part of Zebra 3, not a vintage ROM.[2][6]

Physical modelling is the other half beatmakers did not get from Zebra 2: Noise + Exciter + Modal Resonator, then comb filters with feedback/damping. u-he: drive a marimba or bell profile with a noise burst or patterned pluck, then into a filter, a comb-in-reverb, or an FM operator. Synth and Software’s review: two physical-modelling oscillators, 18 modal models (gong, hard tines, chaotic bell, …), blend between two models; a continuous oscillator into a modal can overload it—use the exciter for strikes.[2][7]

FM: four FMOs, modulator+carrier, any rack signal as a third operator, through-zero. That is how you get metallic bells and vocal-ish formants without a sample. It is not a DX7 librarian.

  • Pluck / bell that is not a Serum pluck Exciter into Modal, short decay, comb for body, analogue LP to sit under a vocal. Resample if you need chops.[2]
  • Bass that needs analogue movement One spline osc, Ladder/Cascade filter, MSEG on cutoff. Unison 2–4, not 16. Compare the job to Vital/Serum on the related pages if this is all you needed.
  • Pad / score texture Additive partials or modal blend, slow MSEGs, FX grid reverb/delay. Factory library is 1,200+ presets—steal the routing, then simplify.

Adaptive UI in Ableton and FL Studio

Modules only appear when added. That is the workflow fix versus a fully populated modular screenshot. Add OSC, Filter, envelope, FX; ignore the rest until a patch needs a mapper or Mod Math. MusicTech and the product page both describe drag-and-drop organisation.[5][2]

Ableton: load the VST3 or AU, not a random duplicate. Freeze the track once the 8-bar hook is written—Zebra 3 is a deep synth, and u-he’s 3.0.0 notes even listed “No multicore support yet” at launch. Recheck 3.0.2 notes before you assume that ceiling moved. FL Studio: wrap as a generator; bounce to audio before you stack five instances on a mixer bank.[4]

MPE, microtuning, and MTS-ESP are on the feature list. Useful if you perform. For a type-beat, draw the MSEG, print the clip, move on.[6]

249 € on u-he.com. Zebra 2 Upgrade Is Cheaper—If You Qualify.

The Zebra 3 product page prints 249 € twice (header cart and footer). That is the list this September 2026 article quotes. Currency at Cleverbridge checkout may show a local equivalent; u-he does not print a USD list on that page.[2]

Same page: people who bought a Zebra 2 licence before 1 November 2022 (before Zebra Legacy) should check My Licenses for upgrade options. “We currently don’t offer a crossgrade path to owners of Zebra Legacy.” If you bought Zebra Legacy after that cutoff, 249 € is the expected door.[2]

The 6 September 2022 Legacy announcement is the written promise: upgrade to Zebra 3 free for owners of Zebra 2 plus The Dark Zebra; otherwise $30 USD, with a note that u-he had already switched shop pricing to Euro. Urs restated the live numbers on KVR at 3.0 launch: €30 from a pre-Legacy Zebra 2 licence, free with Dark Zebra, no Legacy crossgrade. This page does not invent a 2026 street sale. Open My Licenses and read the quote on your account.[3][8]

PathWhat u-he pages printWhat you should not assume
New Zebra 3 (product page)249 €[2]Not a USD list we converted
Zebra 2 bought before 1 Nov 2022Check My Licenses; 2022 promise was $30 USD (shop later in Euro); Urs on KVR at launch: €30[2][3][8]Not a discount for a Legacy licence bought after the cutoff
Zebra 2 + The Dark Zebra (pre-Legacy)Free Zebra 3 on the 2022 announcement; Urs restated free at launch[3][8]Not automatic if Dark Zebra was never registered to the same email
Zebra Legacy (post-cutoff)No crossgrade, on both the 2022 note and the 2026 product page[2][3]Not “upgrade cheaper” just because you own some u-he synth

When Zebra 3 Loses to Serum, Vital, or a Free Synth

If the job is wavetable bass, FX, and a preset ecosystem, start on Serum 2 vs Vital vs Phase Plant and Phase Plant vs Serum 2. Zebra 3 can do wavetable, but its reason to exist is spline + analogue filters + modal/comb in one rack.

If you need a free wavetable to learn modulation, use the Vital tutorial and the free-synth ranking. Paying 249 € to learn ADSR is the wrong order.

If you want six engines and a shallower ramp, that comparison is Pigments 6. Zebra 3 is narrower in “engines” and deeper in one modular rack. Pick the one you will actually patch, not the one with the longer brochure.

First Patch in Ableton or FL: One Osc, One Filter, Print

Confirm the live Zebra 3 user guide on u-he.com if a module name moved after 3.0.2. Known 3.0.0 issues (Bitwig CLAP init, some host quirks) are on the release-notes page—read that list if a control misbehaves.[4]

  1. Check My Licenses before you pay 249 €
Pre-Nov 2022 Zebra 2: look for the upgrade. Dark Zebra on the same account: look for free. Legacy-only: expect list. Demo from u-he if you have never used a u-he synth.[2]
  2. Load VST3 (or AU on Mac) once
Disable duplicate formats in the DAW scan. Ableton: one plug-in on a MIDI track. FL: one generator, not five wrappers of the same DLL.
  3. Init, add one oscillator and one filter
Draw two spline shapes, morph with an MSEG, pick a Ladder/SVF lowpass. Save that as “bass_init” before you add modal or 16× unison.
  4. Make one physical-model pluck and resample it
Exciter → Modal → short comb → analogue LP. Bounce to audio for chops. A continuous osc into Modal can overload—use the strike.
  5. Freeze or flatten before the arrangement pass
Zebra 3 is the sound-design pass, not the mix bus. Print the hook. Do not keep five live instances “in case.”

If you need synths and DAW plug-ins with a licence you can quote, start from verified software rather than treating a 249 € sound-design synth as a free wavetable. Frequently Asked Questions

When did u-he release Zebra 3?
u-he’s news post: Monday 20 April 2026 (3.0.0 rev. 21799). The product page later lists 3.0.2 on 15 July 2026. The 2022 Legacy note already referred to ten years of Zebra 3 speculation.[1][2][3]
How much does Zebra 3 cost on u-he.com?
249 € on the product page as of this September 2026 article. Confirm the live cart; this is not a reseller feed and not a USD conversion.[2]
Can I upgrade from Zebra 2 for less than 249 €?
If you bought Zebra 2 before 1 November 2022, u-he says check My Licenses. The 2022 promise was $30 USD from Zebra 2 (shop later in Euro) and free with The Dark Zebra. Urs on KVR at launch restated €30 / free. Zebra Legacy has no crossgrade.[2][3][8]
Does Zebra 3 load Zebra 2 presets?
Treat it as a new instrument. u-he calls Zebra 3 an entirely new development built on Zebra 2 experience. Do not plan a 1:1 bank migration.
What is actually new versus Zebra 2 for a beatmaker?
Spline/additive oscillators, analogue-modelled filter set, modal resonators + exciters + combs (physical modelling), through-zero FM with a third audio operator, adaptive UI, 1,200+ new factory presets.[2][1]
Will Zebra 3 replace Serum or Vital in Ableton or FL?
Only if you needed physical modelling and spline oscillators. Wavetable bass and FX comparison belongs on the related Serum / Vital / Phase Plant pages. Free Vital still wins if the budget is zero.
Does Zebra 3 run in Ableton Live and FL Studio?
Yes, as a standard VST3 (and AU on Mac) instrument. Load one instance, print audio when the hook is done. Launch notes mentioned missing multicore in 3.0.0—recheck the current release notes.
Is this a Zebra Legacy or Dark Zebra review?
No. This is Zebra 3. Legacy is the post-cutoff Zebra 2 bundle with no Zebra 3 crossgrade. Dark Zebra only matters here as the historic free-upgrade companion on a pre-cutoff account.
